James Ketchell > About The Challenge

On Sunday September 22 (weather permitting) I will leave from Gosport on my most ambitious project to date as I attempt to sail solo around the world on my boat MINDSET.  This will be my third circumnavigation with the first being a cycling circumnavigation in 2013/14 and the second a flying circumnavigation in 2019.  The planned sailing departure date marks the fifth anniversary of my return from my gyrocopter flight around the world.

As with my previous challenges my aim is to inspire and challenge young people to achieve their potential, and during my port of calls I will be visiting local schools to deliver free workshops, as well as posting educational content from the boat.

My boat is a Class 40 racing yacht which was built in 2008 (Hull no 55) and my proposed route will cover 30,000 nautical miles lasting nearly nine months and is planned as:

Gosport to Lanzarote – Arrival approx. Oct 4

Lanzarote to Capetown – Arrival approx Nov 18

Capetown to Melbourne – Arrival approx Jan 6

Melbourne to Punta del Esta (Uruguay) – Arrival approx March 7

Punta del Esta to Antigua – Arrival approx April 27

Antigua to NYC – Arrival approx 26 May

NYC to Gosport – Arrival approx end of June
